El Hanal Pixán o comida de ánimas, es una tradición especial del pueblo maya que se lleva al cabo del 31 de octubre al 2 de noviembre. Durante este tiempo los difuntos se reencuentran con sus seres queridos, regresando a casa para ser honrados con las ofrendas que sus familiares les han preparado.
El 31 de octubre se llaman “U Hanal Palal”, es dedicado a los niños difuntos, el 1 de noviembre llamado “U Hanal Nucuch Uinicoob”, es dedicado a los adultos y 2 de noviembre “U Hanal Pixanoob” dedicado a los fieles difuntos (niños y adultos).
De acuerdo a la creencia, existen ánimas que no tienen familiares o que por algún motivo no les ponen altar, se les conoce como "Ánima Sola"; para ellos se coloca un altar pequeño y sencillo en un rincón de la casa con ofrendas de todo tipo.

El 30 de noviembre se despide a las ánimas con rezos y ofrendas, como pan dulce, chocolate y mukbil pollo, estos amarrados simulando que son para llevar. En la noche se prenden los sobrantes de vela sobre las albarradas para iluminar el camino de las ánimas en su retorno al más allá.

Mérida está ante los ojos del mundo al realizar el “Paseo de las Ánimas”, evento único, tradicional y turístico, que en 2017 congregó a más de 50 mil personas y se ha convertido en un espectáculo imperdible en las fechas de difuntos.
En el “Paseo de las Ánimas” se recrea el derrotero que las almas habrían de transitar en esos días de acuerdo a la Mérida de tiempos antiguos. Se realiza desde el Cementerio General hasta el Arco de San Juan, como ya es tradición, exaltando los valores y costumbres de los meridanos y yucatecos.
La procesión de las ánimas está conformada por adultos, jóvenes y niños caracterizados como difuntos, ataviados con el traje típico yucateco. Entre las actividades, además de la exposición de altares de difuntos típicos de Yucatán, se podrá disfrutar una muestra gastronómica regional, una ceremonia maya y vaquería de las ánimas.
“El Paseo o Corredor de las Ánimas”, se instituyó en el 2008 por el Ayuntamiento de Mérida. With deep hispanic roots, the celebration of Hanal Pixan is a deeply rooted custom that takes place in all the towns in the state of the Yucatan, between October 31st and November 2nd.
It establishes the link between the living and the dead, to honor friends and relatives who have passed away to their eternal rest.
October 31st is dedicated to the children’s souls, November 1st. is dedicated to the adults’ souls and November 2nd. is “Faithful Death Day” (children and adults).
The altars are previously set with the food, candies and the soul’s favorite things.
According to the belief, there are dead people who don’t have relatives to honor them or for some reason they do not set an altar for them; these spirits are called “Lonely Soul”. These souls get sad and begin their return without having accomplished their mission. In this case, a small and simple altar is set on the corner of the house, placing different kind of offerings. Then, they are loudly called to invite them to take the essence of the food.

The “Paseo de las Animas” was started in 2008 by the Ayuntamiento de Merida, as a way to add to the already popular traditional exhibit of altars in various parts of town, known as “Hanal Pixan”. The original tour went between the Ermita church and the Cementerio General, recreating the route that the souls must take during those days.
The procession of souls is made up of children and youth dressed in typical Yucatecan dress and made up to look like the dead. The ceremonial parade is enjoyed by families while observing the traditional altar exhibit, set up with the basic elements that the Mayan culture uses, such as colored or black candles, sweets and drinks of the region, and representative flowers and crosses of Yucatán.
Along the route there will also be characteristic prehispanic music and there will be three stages located at the Cementerio General, La Ermita de Santa Isabel plaza, and the Arco de San Juan, where the colorful will mix with tradition and respect for local customs.
